Nick Augustin, CFP®

Nick Augustin, CFP®, has been helping people with their money for more than 10 years, the last three with Mindful Asset Planning, an RIA in Apple Valley, Minnesota.

Previously, he worked for the state of Minnesota’s Disability Determinations Services, evaluating social security disability claims. Nick has been an active member of the FPA of Minnesota Symposium Committee for four years and currently serves as Symposium Committee Director; he is also on the FPA of Minnesota Board of Directors.

Shawn Brayman

Shawn Brayman, a chartered financial planner, founded PlanPlus Inc. in 1990, and is now the CEO of PlanPlus Global, an amalgamation of two world leaders in fintech solutions for financial planners and advisers—FinaMetrica and PlanPlus.

Shawn has a postgraduate academic technology and AI background. He has served on FPA’s board of directors and is a frequent speaker at global academic, planning and industry trend events.

Shawn has gained a unique perspective on challenges faced by individual practitioners and large financial institutions. Having worked with both experienced planning organizations and firms in the initial stages of introducing financial planning has provided him with a unique understanding of this industry and emergent profession.

Preston D. Cherry, MS, CFP®

Preston D. Cherry, MS, CFP®, is the founder of Concurrent Financial Planning, a comprehensive financial planning firm serving households and business owners across generational lines. He’s currently pursuing a Ph.D. in personal financial planning at Texas Tech University, and serves as a part-time graduate instructor at TTU and Dalton Education.

Preston has served on the Lubbock Habitat for Humanity and 100 Black Men of West Texas boards. Currently, he serves on boards for the Financial Therapy Association, Association of African American Advisors Foundation and Texas Tech Personal Financial Planning Alumni.

Preston writes poetry, plays tennis, has a vinyl music collection and, according to his niece, “is the best uncle in the world.”

Jeffrey A. Drayton, CFP®, CDFA®

Jeffrey A. Drayton, CFP®, CDFA®, is the owner and founder of Jeffrey A. Drayton Financial Planning and Wealth Management, LLC.

Jeffrey is active in both the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors and the FPA of Minnesota chapter. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and teaches financial planning at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

In addition to his roles as both and educator and adviser, Jeffrey enjoys running marathons—he’s completed nine—and is a prize-winning composer of contemporary classical music.

Jeffrey and his wife, Laila, live in Maple Grove, a suburb of Minneapolis. Together they have six children: Gregory, Maja, Gabriel, Ditte, Grace and Anton.

Ian Harvey, CFP®

Ian Harvey, CFP®, joined Financial Asset Management Corporation in 2018, which allowed him to continue enhancing the services he could offer his own clients as well as become an integral part of growing the business processes and strategy for the firm.

Ian earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Virginia Tech, where he was co-founder of FPA’s student chapter. Post-graduation, he served as the local leader liaison to FPA’s NexGen community and now serves as the community’s president.

In 2018, Investment News recognized Ian on their “40 under 40” list of financial advice industry leaders. In his free time, Ian enjoys exploring New York City with his girlfriend, Emily. He is also training for the 2019 Berlin Marathon.

Jessica Hawthorne

Jessica Hawthorne, chapter executive at FPA of Minnesota, is a partner at Office Connection, which specializes in association management and administrative support in the Twin Cities area.

Jessica has called Minneapolis home for more than 15 years, and even looks forward to the cold winters! Prior to putting down roots in Minnesota, she participated in a year-long work abroad program in London, and majored in business administration and marketing at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse.

Although firmly planted in Minneapolis, Jessica still catches the travel bug and frequently visits the Caribbean. She stays busy but always finds time for her family—husband Dev, 11-year-old daughter Hailey, Labradane Emma and Maine Coon mix Montego—and friends.

Betty Meredith

Betty Meredith has 30 years of experience producing professional development, content marketing and consumer education to help advisers, consumers, public sector retirement counselors and plan participants make informed retirement decisions.

As a CFP Board CE Quality Provider, she produces a monthly “retirement conference at your desk” webinar series with today’s leading retirement experts, as well as other content marketing sponsorship programs.

She is a Financial Planning Association® Retirement Knowledge Circle host, and has served on the CFP Board’s CE & Quality Initiative Workgroup. She has also served as an active member of the Society of Actuaries Post-Retirement Needs and Risks research committee for 20 years.

Tom L. Potts Ph.D., CFP®

Dr. Tom L. Potts, CFP®, is a professor of finance at Baylor University. He holds a B.B.A. and M.S. in economics from Baylor, and a Ph.D. in finance with a minor in economics from the University of Illinois.

In 2006, Dr. Potts was elected to the national board of directors of FPA; he is the first academic to serve on the FPA national board. He served as president of FPA for 2010 and chairman of the board of directors for 2011.

The Personal Financial Planning Association at Texas Tech University presented Dr. Potts the first Distinguished Lifetime Achievement award in 2007. He was also recognized by the Financial Planning Association of Dallas/Fort Worth chapter as an Honors Award recipient in 2010.

Mark Prendergast, CPA, CFP®, CDFA

Mark Prendergast, CPA, CFP®, CDFA, is the director of tax strategies at Inspired Financial, a financial planning firm that focuses on women in transition in Huntington Beach, California.

Mark as been a member of FPA since the late 1980s and has served in volunteer leadership positions at chapter, regional, state and national levels. He also serves as a host for the Tax and Estate Planning Knowledge Circle, an online community in FPA Connect.

Mark is married to the dynamic Evelyn Zohlen and they have three adult children, with whom they love spending time. He has run more than 20 marathons in his life, including ones in Bordeaux and Bhutan.

Janet Stanzak, CFP®

Janet Stanzak, CFP®, has a master’s degree in financial planning and is a past president of both FPA and FPA of Minnesota. She has served the association in many capacities, including helping to develop the first comprehensive strategic business plan.

Janet practices comprehensive financial planning in Minneapolis, focusing primarily on retirement planning, withdrawal strategies and portfolio management. She also volunteer teaches personal finance in area high schools alongside a local nonprofit.

Chair of the 2019 FPA Annual Conference Task Force, Janet also is the 2018 recipient of the Heart of Financial Planning Award. Janet’s been married for 35 years to a wonderful husband, has two adult children, an English springer named Marley, and loves golf, cooking, and cross-country skiing.

Trudy R. Turner, CPA/PFS, CFP®, CPWA®

Trudy R. Turner, CPA/PFS, CFP®, CPWA®, is a wealth management professional with more than 25 years of experience.

Trudy has served in local and national leadership positions for FPA: as chair of the Dallas/Fort Worth chapter, chair of the Chapter Leaders Conference, co-founder of the FPA Diversity Task Force and inaugural chair of the FPA Diversity Scholarship Committee.

She also has served with the American Institute of CPAs PFS Credentialing Committee, CFP Board and Association of African American Financial Advisors. However, her most impactful role is as a mentor and ally to numerous aspiring financial planners, including high school students in the Texas Tech University Financial Planning Academy.
