The Japanese word “kaizen” can be translated as “change for better,” and has a similar meaning to the English word improvement. In business, the word represents a philosophy encompassing activities that promote constant improvement.
One of the most valuable characteristics of kaizen, when put into practice successfully, is that its activities affect every aspect of a business.While the improvements are often realized on a small scale, because they are continuous, the volume of minute adjustments drives the business forward.
Given that definition, would you say that you are practicing a philosophy like kaizen in your business? This can be a difficult question to answer, as it’s never easy to look at something you’ve worked so hard to build and to find, much less admit, that it could use some work.
It can sometimes help to think of constant improvement as an enduring test of your mettle and resolve. Even if your practice is humming along at a good clip, you can still challenge yourself with the question, “Can I be better?” If we’re honest with ourselves, the answer is almost always, “Yes.”
